Introduction to an Advertising Major

Hi! My names Haley Piper and I am 21 years old. I am from Flower Mound, Texas, but I have lived in a lot of places! My family has lived in Missouri, Illinois, North Carolina and now, Texas. I have one sister who is five years older than me named Katie. Katie attended the University of Oklahoma when I was in 8th grade, so I immediately knew that I wanted to go here!

I love OU and all of the things it has to offer. Currently, I am a senior (yikes) advertising major with enterprise studies minor. I love being in Gaylord because of all of the creative people. My major is so cool because I get to work with all different types of businesses all over the world! This summer I interned with a wedding dress designer which was so cool. I ran all of their social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) and really got some awesome real world experience.

This leads to what I want to do when I graduate in nine months (!!!). I would love to see myself back in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I honestly will take anything when I graduate, but if I have a choice, I would love to work in fashion/lifestyle industry! Working in teams is something I do best and that's why I chose advertising.

In my free time, I love to travel (would LOVE to visit Austria soon!), shop of course, swim, see movies and reading! Reading is something so important to me because it lets your mind take a break. Recently I read a book called "The Royal We" and I highly recommend it. I also love my dogs! My family has two dogs, Max and Lucy. We adopted Lucy this January and she is the absolute best. She only has three legs, but she does not let anything hold her back. We call her "tri-pawd." :) Max is a white highland terrier who is super cute, but hates people. I have lots to be thankful for!

  1. Oh, what great dog pictures, Haley: tripawd Lucy looks so focused and intense, and Max looks like a real sweetie. Maybe they can feature in some stories you tell for class this semester!

And that is so cool about running social media platforms for a designer: wow! I am a huge fan of the power of social media (and of networking in general), and knowing how to use that power to your advantage is going to be an important job skill in the future. If you want to play around with social media styles of storytelling for this class, that might also be fun. People have used faux Twitter and faux Facebook generators to tell stories; here's a Facebook Aesop for example: Manebook: Connecting Lions Since Aesop's Time. In addition to being fun, it also really allows for different ways of interweaving of voices in a story very creatively, so it's an approach that can be used with really any kind of story if you want to experiment with something like that later on. Based on your real experience with those networks professionally, I am guessing you would have some really good insights into those storytelling styles! :-)

  2. Hi Haley!
We are pretty much on the same page of life at the moment. We’re both 21, we’ve both lived in Illinois, we love going to new places, shopping, swimming, seeing movies, reading, being a crazy dog lady and one of my dogs is half west highland terrier as well. Damn… but some things are definitely different! Before coming here for school, my family and I only moved across the street once! I’ll have to check out that book… You should try the Outlander series! It will keep you going for a long time.

P.s. the name Tripod is absolutely hilarious. I love it!

  3. Hey Haley!

I think its pretty neat that you have moved around a lot and lived a lot of places, Ive only ever lived in Tulsa so I think it would be pretty interesting to have lived in a different state. I think its awesome that you love to travel, where all have you been? I just went to Europe for the first time this summer and loved it! Your intership this past summer sounds like it was super fun and helpful, and I really hope it helps you land a great job after you graduate. I love your dogs btw, they both look so adorable and the fact that you call Lucy tripawd absolutely cracks me up!

  4. Haley,
I love your dogs!!! They are both so incredibly adorable and I love the 'Tri-pawed" nickname, it's so clever. That's crazy that your an advertising major because I'm public relations so I have probably seen you around Gaylord quite a bit! Your intern ship sounds so cool! I too am from the Dallas/Fort Worth area and agree that would be a great city to return to for business. I'm going to look into that book you recommend because I am a massive book worm! I look forward to reading more of your work this semester!

  5. Oh my gosh I love your dogs! I have a German Shepard mix named Deuce and he is my baby. I think it's super cool that you got to intern with a wedding dress company. I was a bridesmaid at a wedding last summer and we all watched Say Yes to the Dress with the bride. It's really great that you are so passionate about your major!

  6. Hi Haley! I live in Plano, Texas and was born in Missouri, so I have lived in two of the four places that you have. I am also a senior and always feeling the “yikes.” I am currently also looking for jobs back in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I really want to travel to Italy after graduation but I bet Austria would be a lot of fun.

  7. Hi Haley! First of all, I must congratulate you, you probably have the best major ever, it actually sounds like a lot of fun... Being a petroleum engineer means having the worst college life possible. Anyway, I am someone who loves travelling too and I have visited many countries already but I wonder why do you want to visit Austria specifically. I have been there before and I can tell you that Vienna is a magnificent city.

  8. Hi Haley! My roommate is also an Advertising major and I have so much respect for yall. I work horribly in groups and I wish it was something I was better at because I feel like it is a very important skill. I am also jealous you get to spend all of your time in Gaylord. I am a science major so basically all of my classes are in Dale...yuck. I love to read as well. Honestly I could read anything and enjoy it as long as it is not a textbook! Your dogs are adorable...they make me miss all of my pups at home!

  9. Hi Haley!
I think your major is super cool! And I'm a little jealous of where you got to intern this summer. That sounds like so much fun! As for traveling Austria is amazing and beautiful! If your a sound of music fan you must go on the sound of music tour when you are there. Also your dogs are super adorable! I have a jack Russell terrier at home but I've always wanted a white highland terrier! I can't wait to see what else you come up with for this semester!

  10. Hi Haley! I'm also a Gaylord senior, but I'm in PR. You are so right about the people in Gaylord and advertising (PR for me) allowing you to work in groups and with a lot of different companies. It always keeps you moving and on your toes. I bet your internship this summer was so fun. I'm jealous! I also just read The Royal We like a month ago. It was so good! What a funny coincidence. The ending was pretty open, but I think they ended up having the big wedding, too. Have a great semester!

  11. Hi Haley! I am also a senior in Gaylord and I totally identify with your "yikes" comment! I think it is awesome that you are so passionate about the fashion industry! With your experience in social media and love of fashion you should check out the Instagram page of (@berrigoldfarbpr) they are a PR agency that does a lot of fashion placements with celebrities and social media! PR agencies are always looking for advertising majors!! Good luck on the rest of your senior year and I look forward to reading your stories!

  12. Tai-Pawed... That is maybe the cutest thing I have heard in a while. I too have a dog that hates people,so I understand how that is. Being a senior is terrifying. On one hand I am so ready to graduate, but on the other, I am so scared for what is to come. Whatever happens at the end of 9 months, I am sure both you and I will find something that interests us.

  13. Haley,

It seems like everyone in this class has at least one dog and goes to Gaylord. It must have been exciting to live so many places, but also stressful to move around that much at the same time. Thanks so much for sharing. Good luck with the remainder of this class and the rest of the upcoming semester.

  14. Nice to meet you Haley! Your dogs are adorable! I think what you are wanting to do after graduation sounds awesome! The fashion industry has always interested me, but I never saw myself in that line of work. Plus if given the chance I would rather work by myself than in a group, I'm kind of a loner. I totally agree with you that reading is like taking a break. I love love love to read and have since I was little. Since I started college I have found it harder to find time to read for pleasure and I miss it dearly, which is one of the reasons I enjoy this class so much. Well good luck on your future plans and I hope you end up where you want to be!

  15. Hi Haley! I have also lived in a lot of different places! I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then lived in Chicago and Denver before I moved to Flower Mound, Texas. My sister also went to OU, along with my grandpa so I knew I wanted to follow in their footsteps! I think it is absolutely hilarious that you call Lucy “tri-pawd” that is absolutely hilarious! I’m looking forward to reading more of your posts!

  16. Hi Haley!

Congratulations on making it your senior year!! Wishing you all the luck in your classes this last year because senioritis does kick in. I am planning on going to Europe this summer and Austria is definitely on my list as well. That is so cool you interned for a wedding dress designer. I would love to just experience that for a day and see how the process is. The fashion industry is HUGE. It is forever changing and I don't see how anyone could get bored with working in that industry. Good luck with everything and I am looking forward to reading your posts.

  17. Hey Haley,

So many people in this class are cat people, but finally I've found a dog person! Hooray! My parents have 3 miniature dachshunds at my house and I miss them a lot! I'm also a senior, and I have the exact same attitude as you: I'll take anything!

Best of luck to you in the future / in your job hunt!

    Joe

  18. I love love love, reading. It’s been a passion of mine since I first cracked open a book! I have heard of the Royal We and I even have it on my TBR, which is only got 974 books (I have a GoodReads account) … Not much at all. It’s so nice to see someone in love with their future career it’s not often that happens with college students so it’s really refreshing.

  19. Congratulations on being so close to graduation! Your internship sounds like it was an awesome opportunity! With experience you will find the job that is right for you! I think its great that you have lived in different places. I lived in the same house until about my junior year in high school when we moved out of the country and into town. Good luck with the job hunt!

  20. Hi Haley,

Ahh! I can really relate to the excitement around graduating as I am finishing my undergrad in May as well. It so interesting and fun that as an advertising major you were able to have an internship with a wedding dress designer. It really shows how vast an advertising degree can be! I hope any and all upcoming interviews go well and you are able to go back to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in the spring with a job in hand! Good luck!

  21. Aw, I have a bunch of family in the Flower Mound area! Very cool, very nice area down there. And I love the pictures of your dogs :) They're so cute! On my to-do list right after I graduate is to adopt a dog. I had one when I was younger, but since I moved away from home my heart has been yearning to get one for myself. Good luck on the job hunt, I know it can be stressful!!

I hope that your job search (if that’s what you’re doing?) is going super well! Congrats on only being about one more semester away from graduating, and good luck with future things!

  23. Hey Haley!
I love the photos of your dogs they are so cute!!
Just like you, I have moved around a lot so we have that in common. I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, then moved to Georgia, and then to Texas. I still live in Fort Worth, Texas, but in a different house than before! It keeps life interesting.
